Pilot Thomas Mantell lost his life in pursuit of an unidentified flying object on January 7, 1948.

Thomas Mantell chased an unidentified flying object which was visually verified at several different locations. The experienced pilot was killed as he attempted unsuccessfully to overtake the tremendous metallic craft.
